Burgoon Company began in 1988 as a scientific and laboratory supply sales company. Nancy Evans, drawn by the opportunity to grow this small HUBZone company and to develop a team from diverse backgrounds and cultures, purchased the business in 2005. Soon thereafter Evans created management positions and promoted a core group of dedicated high achieving employees.
Many product lines and a multitude of customers have been added over the course of the last twenty years. Burgoon Company now sells supplies and equipment to government agencies, prime contractors, and research and educational institutions located in every region of the United States.
In September of 2008, Hurricane Ike wreaked havoc in Galveston. The main floor of Burgoon Company’s office was destroyed by over seven feet of contaminated flood water, and most of the employees lost their homes and everything they owned. Determined to serve their customers and to succeed in spite of this crisis, the team quickly assembled in a temporary office in Houston offered by Grainger, Burgoon’s strategic alliance partner and mentor. As a result, Burgoon Company was open for business on the second business day following the hurricane. The seamless transition to the temporary office allowed this small business to fulfill its customers’ emergency supply orders in the wake of this terrible disaster. To this day, many customers are unaware that this small company was impacted by the storm, but the Burgoon team will never forget surviving and succeeding in the wake of the hurricane, and will be forever grateful to the scores of Grainger staff members who provided shelter and support in many forms during Burgoon's time of need.
Since that time, the economy has taken a turn for the worse, but Burgoon Company is one of the few small businesses in Galveston to return to the island within three weeks of the hurricane to pick up the pieces, and the entire team has rededicated itself to success through excellent customer service and innovation. Thousands of Gulf Coast employees’ jobs have been eliminated, but Burgoon Company has not reduced staff, benefits, or wages.
Owner Nancy Evans is passionate about her commitment to the basic tenets of the HUBZone program. Burgoon Company hires and trains residents of federally designated HUBZone communities, and the team strives every day to accomplish their goals and to improve their circumstances and the future of their families and their community.
